The influences behind my field of study and the setting of Crescendo, are stemmed both from personal experience and tragedy. I have always been interested in Walking Sims and Non-Games, and have always wanted to produce one of my own to be proud of.
As for the Alzheimer's disease part of Crescendo, I am currently living at home with my Grandma who suffers from it. It is not a graceful disease and it is not a fair one. I really wanted this project to be personal to me, so I have based it upon actual happenings at home, using my grandparents as templates for the fictional story between an old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease and her dead husband she cannot seem to find (My granda is still with us, and he takes really good care of her). The Game is littered with little winks tomy grandparents, such as a young picture of my Granda used as the husband's photo, and almost the entire living room based on furnature from out house.
Crescendo would hopefully bring more attention to the cause, and if/when I get back into building the game, and developing it further, it would be good to use it to helo raise money for it.
That's all I'm willing to say about it here, but I'm always open to talk about anything with anybody, so if you can travk me down, go nuts! (Don't really go nuts, please.)

OPERATION T.C R.
Some few months back, a small handful of us were contacted by an external client hoping to get some of us involved with their work. Thanks to a nondisclosure agreement (NDA), we are unable to say anything about it, other than say it is work for an external client, making minor assets for an upcoming AAA video game. We don't get paid for it, but we do recieve a glorious art credit, which would be awesome. It's just a darn shame I can't put any of the work I did into my portfolio until the game itself is released.
Super amazing vague blog post, I know, I really do. Will be great to finally be able to tell people all about it.
During my time working on the 3 assets I chose, I have learned some important lessons about presentation of work, file layout, the inclusion of Gloss maps alongside my speculars, correct topology in different scales, and even a little bit about Physically Based Lighting. Incredibe. Super.
(Galaxy Ripples are still the most amazing thing, afyer Macaroni of course.)

Friends, Robots, and Robotic Friends.
This is just an add-on to the personal skills development post, where over the course of some weeks (who even uses numbers anymore, am I ri- what? I'm not?! Well, I never), I and a handful of friends gathered to work through the day and evening every Saturday to model SOMETHING. The something would be predetermined through the week as we talked about it at Uni. Dubbed Mech Jam, as the first I attended was building a mech in 24 hours!
It's all good fun and games. I guess.

Personal Skills Development
Over the last year I delved in pushing my personal skills development by ctpreating a number of small assets and UDK prototypes in order to keep my digital art skills in check for when the time came to start building scene assets I wouldn't be too rusty. Most, if not all, were just small assets and only one was actually polished to a finished piece.
This is just a short post, but enjoy the images of all the fun bits and bobs I produced outside of coursework. I still plan to work on the Prosthetic Chicken Legs!
(If a net got torn, there would actually be less holes in it.)

27-04-2015 SUBMISSION DAY
I was up until 6am last night throwing Crescendo together, with about 2.5 hours sleep as predicted. Im surprised by just how much I actually got done, with some things learning along the way. The Terrain tool was easily the Kraken of my problems, constantly dragging me down and generally being shit. It caused UDK to crash a number of times, and constantly bugged out. however it is done.
I had some good fun playing with getting some of the fundamental mechanics into the game, such as the scene desaturation in the Living room, hiding masses of books, and throwing in some pretty portals! I now have a firm understanding of how not only how the Terrain tool works, but also how the material editior's nodes work, Matinee, and file organisation in UDK. If only I had learned this sooner!
Anyway, to not keep going on with this, what with a submission to do TODAY and all that, I'll cut this a little short!
Still to throw my portfolio together and do a screen capture of the game running. Will wait until I am home until I do so though, so I can capture the game at its fullest potential and free of lag.
Cheerio for now!
(My god, I never knew a ham and mayo sandwich could taste so good. Maybe I'm just too tired.)

25-04-2015 Assets Lightmapped, Collisionified, and Exported!
Oh my dear sweet Jesus crispy goodness! Snag after snag, here we are less than 48 hours to the deadline and I've only JUST started going into UDK and poking around Kismet. The last 2 days have been entirely spent on prepping mldels for export and import from 3DS Max to UDK, and it has been tedious. But from here on I have all my assets packaged in a .upk with all materials set up and applied to the models.
Tomorrow is going to be a horrible rush, that much is obvious, and I'm surely not going to get much more than a couple hours of sleep before Monday. For the wasy part it'll just be drag and drip into the scene to create the levels, and the programming is already set up in the prototype, so duplicating it is not a big problem? What could go wrong... Harrumph.
Will at least be working on my Desktop computer with DirectX 11 and a GPU powerful enough to detonate the sun with the right input. All will be fine. Just need to keep a cool head and keep on smiling!

23-04-2015 Setbacks and Tribulations
Rocks were a lot harder the create than I had initially thought. They can be as random as you want them to be, and they come in literally every shape, size and colour. There are no stines the same in the universe! So why is it so hard?!
Eventually I came up with a legit way of calculating where thelines and details should be on the rock in a similar way to how I did the wiggly lines on the driftwood.
Alongside the rocks are the bright and colourful flower patches! I'm really please how not only they came out with such an experimental voncept, but also everything else in this beach scene. I sincerely wish I had put more time and effort into this scene over the living room, but live and let learn; that's what I... Sometimes say.
Anyways, all the assets are done for this scene and I can go home to chill out for the last time until after the Monday submission.
So much to do, and 3 days to do it. Sounds like a party.
(Thought of the day: How many cows would it take to make enough cheese to make a 1:1 scale moon?)

22-04-2015 Great wall of Dundee
Another day, another asset. Today was extremely productive, however again only one asset was produced. Well, maybe closer to 5 assets, all being modules of the same drystone wall. I really wanted to try and do a 3D drystone wall, and decided to just gun it! I'm really happy with how it came out in the end, and though I was really productive, it's still just one more asset.
Looking at it again and again, I can see how my digital painting and texturing skills have come along through this semester alone. Everything gets done in the end! No need to get stressed about anything, so plans will need shifted a little so I can het the last of the assets finished tomorrow.
The future looks good, and I look forward to working on other projects I have planned for summer!
But I knda only got one side done...

21-04-2015 Tokyo Driiiiiiiift... wood
Beep beep! Driftwood was an interesting choice of asset. I felt that the sandy beach needed something more than just big hulking rocks as detail, so thus it was born. I'm really pleased with how it came out, even if it does look like a malnourished hammerhead shark washed ashore... Shh!
Yet another day with not too much getting done. I mean sure, yeah, the the driftwood and bench might look cool and I'm happy with how they cane out, but it's a days work done in 2 with time I don't have. Anyway though, the remaining assets needed done are a collection of 1-3 large rocks, copious amounts of flowers, a fence or wall to mark the beach area boundary, and some smaller rocks to populate the scene better. Plenty to do, and I need to get it all done for my meeting with Lynn on Thursday at 11am!
I've already told myself no all-nighters this year, because it just doesn't help. If there's one thing I've learned at university (among so much), is that even 1-2 hours of sleep after a long night of working is better than zero. You might feel like crap when woken up, but you won't clock out at noon!

20-04-2015 Nice day in the park
Got off to a pretty good start with the beach assets, starting with a park bench and tufts of grass. Trying to keep these assets to as few as possible, and stay away from complex shapes, it saddens me to say I've not only gotten rid of the cottage, but also the tree; replaced with a comemorative wooden bench. I'm confident that I can still get it to work in the scene though.
Not the most productive of days despite the harsh time limit on mind, but let's just see how tomorrow goes! I may have gotten rid of the tree from my scene, but I have a little asset I'll use in place of it, so I can still practice natural wood textures.

19-04-2015 Finished living room assets!
As of now, all assets for the living room have been dealt with and the push just keeps on pushing! Will be moving on to the Beach scene this week and try to get all the assets done in 3 days (I have no other choice), and have 4 more days to compile everything into UDK and make Crescendo into an actual game!
It's exciting thinking I can finally start putting things together now!
Here are the images of the finished assets, as per usual.

15-04-2015 Macaroni Madness!
Today has been a BIG push with modelling and texturing! As you can see in the images, it finally looks like n almost completely finished room!
HUZZAH!!
Today I did:
Modelled and Textured the armchair, cushion, and blanket.
Textured the Rug
Something else I can't remember!
So now all that needs to be done are the window blinds, tall lamp, ceiling light, piano texture, candles, and a single flower.
All will be done for Friday, easy peasy!
But now it is late, and I'm going to rush to bed for 6 hours before starting the cycle all over again! Woop.
Enjoy the progress pics!
(I think I've had macaroni 3 days in a row now, and tomorrow's macaroni day!)

Another day, another headache! Today was a little slow, as I was feeling a little dizzy, but not too bad with regular intervals away from the screen. Continued progress on the assets, though not yet touched my dissertation again, so that'll be the primary focus for the next 3 days! Short post is short, so here are a couple images of the room and of the hospital modules. The hospital consists of just 4 corridor modules, and a handful of small assets; mostly signs and such.

13-04-2015 Battle Plan!
Had a really good talk with Lynn today, as we addressed my concerns with a solid battle plan for the next 2 weeks before deadline. I've left the panic stage again, and now back right into work beast mode!

Plan to have the living room finished and game ready by the end of Wednesday. For Friday; my Dissertation more-or-less completed, and the hospital hallway modules, which I have started on.
It's all coming together well, and it's gonna be an exciting next 2 weeks indeed!

12-04-2015
Met up with Harry today for breakfast before heading into Whitespace at around 11:30AM. Was nice and quiet with only a few of us in, so I was able to get my head down and get a good 5 hours of work done of texturing and unwrapping done. Very almost finished this scene, and I can't wait to see the back of it.
Dissertation is in an urgent need of attention, so that will be Monday's main focus, and probably the rest of the coming week also. Would like to have this scene done a week ago, but realistically have it done by Tuesday. It HAS to be for there to even be a remote chance of me finishing this project on time.
I have a couple of simple ideas to cut down on the production a good chunk while saving the interaction, so I'll see how that pans out in the next coming days.
Till tomorrow, fellow cosmonauts!
I look forward to speaking with Lynn with my updates. I've been feeling really down these last few days about the fear of not finishing, but I don't have time for that! Plenty time!
(M83 is now my current favourite band. I highly recommend their work.)

11-04-2015 Day at the beach.
Spending today at home up in the living room doing some work, but not being totally productive. Ended up taking a walk down to the Ferry with my mum for coffee, a cake, and some fresh air. Went back the ways along the rocky gardens by the beach, which has to be one of my favourite places in all of the Dundee area. So many childhood memories here, playing with my sisters, cousins, and fellow church goers. Used to come here a lot with my Grandma also back when she was a lot more capable than she is now.
The gardens are absolutely beautiful at this time of the year! Spring is easily my favourite season of the year, as it brings out all the flowers to play. Will be coming back here a lot more to take pictures and draw I think. To anybody reading this, I highly recommend it.
Back to work tonight though.
(Macaroni Cheese and Haggis is a recipe anybody should try)

10-04-15
This thing really isn't going to go away, and it just had to come at the best of times, right? The doctors office was completely useless, as to get a morning appointment, you MUST call in around 8AM, which I did, but after 40 minutes of waiting to get through, the entire day was booked solid, and mornings the next day cannot be booked. I cannot deal with this nonsense right now.
Came into uni again today after being stuck in bed doing nothing the last 2 days. The only thing worse than being unwell, is being unwell and stressed out about everything!
I am so sorry to Lynn about missing BOTH of this weeks meetings, I always feel so bad about it. Will see her for sure on Monday coming, so let's focus on what can be done NOW!
Continuing work on the room assets and the end goal is in sight. Will do some work through the weekend at home, and probably go in to the library one on either Saturday or Sunday to do some work on my Dissertation.
(eeeeeeeeyup. Evita again!)
See you tomorrow!

Will be keeping this post short. My head continues to rampage on, and it's been really bad since Saturday evening. Dee-Con was on up at the Dundee Union which was cool, but since then I've mostly been holed up in bed wolfing down Paracetamol. I missed my meeting with Lynn yesterday after for some reason thinking it was actually today. My head is better today, but not 100%.
Production of work is slowing down which is very annoying as I had aimed to have my living room scene finished and ready for UDK import by now, but I still have a way to go yet. I MUST have it done this week, or else panic really will set in.
(Paracetamol tastes like out-of-date chalk, but it performs miracles!)
Till next time, folks.

Short post today, and a bit of a guilty confession. Having failed to complete and hand in my form for the degree show (another one of my head-burying moments), I was approached my Claire asking me about such, who then stole me from my desk to complete the form with her.
At least it's done and out of the way, right? Right.
Will be bringing in my own desktop computer and monitor etc, so I can have my game playing next to where my showcase corner will be located. This will allow the public to come in and physically play my game at its full graphical capacity. I understand the risks that if it does get stolen or damaged it's my own fault, but that's the way it goes.
I look forward to the degree show C:

A rather eventful but slow day today. Tonight I will need to jump into bed as soon as I get home for a nice and long refreshing sleep to get my mind back on track! Got a few items unwrapped today, and a couple of them textured, but most of my day was spent on the fireplace. I'm very pleased with how it's looking, but the fact it took as long as the room's textures.... yeah.
I guess this is just a short blog post, but I'll do a few tomorrow to bring y'all up to speed on what's next on my list after the living room!
Enjoy these stills~

Today has been very busy day, and proper texture production of the scene has begun! Tanking forwards toward the deadline i promised both Lynn and myself to have the room fully game ready by (7th April), and I feel confident I'll have it done in time, just.
I've so far gotten 3 assets textured, including the main room model itself; modelled, unwrapped and ready for game implementation! (after I do collision boxes.... and light maps)
It's been a bit of an annoying day aside from being productive, as we were pushed out of our work space in whitespace, and left with no alternative... again. It's very frustrating that as 4th years, we're not treated with a bit more consideration. We ended up camping out on the 3rd floor of the old college in an empty classroom. It's a really nice peaceful space... but then we were told off for not booking it, which is rediculous. IT'S THE HOLIDAYS!
We need to sort this out soon...

Not the most productive day today, but I've been pushing on to get the last few furnature assets done. Going to keep this post short, as I don't believe I have accomplished enough to post about it, but heyo. Plenty to do, and I'm just about at the texturing stage, which I've been looking forward to!
Was writing more of my CV today as well, which I think is going good. Would be nice to start applying to places this weekend!

28/29-03-15 Bad times up in the noggin.
Was off from work on Friday due to being stuck in bed from a crippling headache. Still recovering somewhat, but paracetemol helps. Decided to go into uni on Saturday to do a little work after being frustrated on Friday from the inability to even do so. Today though, is Sunday, which means break day. I don't get why some of my classmates can't understand how important taking some planned down-time is. Yes, deadlines are coming closer and closer every day, but over working yourself for 7 days a week at over 12 hours at a time isn't going to do you or your work any good. Chillax for a day~
As a nice little note aside from this rant, which I would guess is still related to the project, my Grandma went outside for the afternoon, which is the first time since she moved in back around August! She went in the car all over Dundee, and even up to the Law. It's things like this that makes coping with Alzheimer's much easier. Something to smile about for a while anyway.

25-03-2015 Let's get down to business
Today I spent the day continuing to build the first of the 3D assets for game implementation, and aim to have them finished and textured completely by the 6th of April in 13 days time. Asset lists and sketches for others have been jotted down and I fiddled around a little bit in UDK to test out some extra cinematic mechanics.
About to work on my dissertation just now and get a good 500 words done for tomorrow where I'll do another. Hoping to have my roughed out dissertation ready for review in about 7-10 days from now.
These are the currently built 3D assets, 50% unwrapped, and 50% of the assets modelled. Most remaining assets are small to help fill out the room, where the rest are the walls and a couple of pieces of furnature.

First semester: a summary.
!ULTIMATE UPDATE OF THE GODS!
What happened during First semester?
First semester of this year wasn't quite as eventful as the second, however I went through many stages of development of my idea. Originally I really just wanted to create an a story telling walk-through environment which would tell the story in an interesting way, interacting with the player to change the scene as the story progressed. Early on I really wanted to pin down on a story-line to focus my ideas on, which started out very different from how they are now. Early ideas ranged from a recreation of an older project which sparked this one, a twisted abstract alternate universe first world war in the sky, and all the way to a romantic and tragic tale of multiple sets of lovers telling the same story.
It later became evident that pinning down a story so early on before really exploring just what question I was asking with this project was not the right direction to go in. I was very lost on what I was actually doing in the first semester feeling far behind everybody all the time. Even by the end when I had a fairly solid question/concept to go on, I still did not have a topic or setting to pull it all together into a practical project.
My presentations through the year have been very interesting. I've performed not only my worst ever presentation where I completely froze up and just couldn't remember anything, but I also rapidly improved and told my best ever presentation just 2 attempts after. Very proud that I can now give deliver a smooth stream of information about my work without stuttering too much and actually feeling good while doing it. It's the rehearsals that get me. I just needed to tell myself to talk like I always do, but just focus on the key elements.
It wasn't until the Christmas break after the first semester hand-ins that I actually had that massive brainwave which I had been waiting for. A topic. A story. Something that was not only interesting, but was also personal to myself and very relevant to the research I had been doing.
Since August 2014, my grandparents(mother's side) moved in at home with my parents and I. The reason for which, is that my Grandma is in fairly late-stage Alzheimer's Disease, and my Granda wasn't able to care for her properly on his own. It was after the suggestion during New Year's dinner that my Uncle, who has always massively supported me with my art, seeded the idea of using this as a setting of my project. This was an instant click in my mind and I knew I had then found exactly the story I had needed, and ideas were flowing in fast afterwards.

This has been a fantastic short essay, but thank you for reading.

Here we are.
Alright then, here we are. Spring. Just a few weeks left away from the ultimatum of the course. The end of a good long 4 years that now feels like months. This blog, as obvious, has been completely neglected but not forgotten due to my own faults. When things started piling up one thing on top of another, I slowly started burying my head under the sand hoping for everything to blow over. I've worked hard on my project the past year and I'm proud of where it is, but I have failed to properly document it up on here.
You could look at this post as a confession of sorts, but I am just trying to make use of what time I have left to produce SOMETHING, even if it doesn't improve my grade. For the next coming weeks up to the deadline and even up to the Degree Show itself, I will be documenting as many days as I can on this blog with a fair handful of information and update images, like I should have been doing the past year.
It's time I start opening my eyes up to the world and understand that I can't just wait for things to resolve themselves. I am not pleased with my actions, and never have I been, but this is the way it is now.
I do hope you enjoy what little left I have to offer in terms of development information.
Thank you,
-Peter Danskin
